UNSW Law students Chris Chiam and Veronica Sebesfi, placed first in the recent 2017 Australian Red Cross and Australian Law Students’ Association (ALSA) International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Mooting Competition in Canberra.

Defeating the Queensland University of Technology team in a challenging grand final, both speakers displayed an impressive understanding of international humanitarian law and showed exceptional advocacy skills.

The IHL Moot, which has been running for over a decade, raises awareness of international humanitarian law issues within the Australian university community. The Moot assists students in understanding and appreciating the growing importance of international humanitarian law, its nature as a system of protection during times of armed conflict and its role as fundamental part of international law.

Each law school in Australia is invited to nominate a team of two law students to compete in the competition.

The Australian Red Cross and Australian Law Students’ Association annual IHL moot competition will be held again in mid-2018. Students are encouraged you to contact the UNSW Law Society for more information on how to represent UNSW in this competition.
