On 28-29 September 2017, UNSW Law’s Associate Professor Chris Michaelsen and his collaborators on the ARC Discovery Project on influence in the United Nations Security Council, held a workshop in Florence Italy entitled ‘Influence in the United Nations Security Council: rethinking the role of elected members’. The cross-disciplinary workshop brought together a distinguished group of diplomats, practitioners and academics with the aim of better understanding the factors that impact the level of influence elected members can have on the UN Security Council’s decision-making.
The keynote address was delivered by Ambassador Antonio Patriota, a former Brazilian Minister of External Relations and current Brazilian ambassador to Italy, who reflected on Brazil’s perspective about participation and influence in global governance amid a transitioning global order.

The project team is now looking ahead to workshops to be held in New York, Singapore and Addis Ababa in 2018 and 2019.
